Great instrument and MIDI controller, but needs note/pad editor
I bought Orphion for the iPad and liked it, but didnt even realize there was an iPhone version. Upon discovering it was only 99 cents, it was an easy decision to try it out. The iPhone version sounds great, and even the smaller screen wasnt a huge problem because it was nice to hold the device and use both thumbs to reach the whole screen.
As a MIDI controller, the app is excellent. I dont think it does velocity control (or I didnt figure it out), which is too bad. But the feeling of controlling a powerful synth library with the clean, neat interface of this app is pretty great.
Really the only problem I have with the app is the once cited multiple times by other reviewers, which is that this iPhone version does not allow you to set up your own pad arrangements. There are probably about 10 of them available, and you can transpose them up or down with the sharp/flat buttons. But that leaves a pretty limited set of options. In the iPad version, there is a 99 cent in-app purchase to edit your own pad arrangements. Perhaps the developer thought the iPhone screen was too small for that, but some type of solution is needed, or the app is just a bit too limited in its usefulness.
That problem aside, I really enjoy the interface and the sound of the instrument, which is sort of like a percussive plucked string. Certainly worth 99 cents, but could be better with more control options.
